Meanwhile, the infrastructure of a mobile broadband communication network requires as much energy per year as all households of a medium-sized city with 160 000 inhabitants. Consequently, the network’s operation gives rise to considerable carbon footprints and expenses because of the required energy. Therefore, the challenge exists in significantly reducing the power consumption of the network’s infrastructure and improving the energy-efficiency of the base stations. This talk presents new concepts for the RF power amplifiers, innovative multi-processor architectures, improved system integration and an energy-aware life-cycle management as well as advanced techniques for less cooling of the base stations, which are dedicated to improve the base station’s energy efficiency.
