Interactive Haptic Map for the Visually Impaired
A audio-haptic map on Pin-matrix Braille display
Limin Zeng
With a goal of improving map accessibility and providing available navigation service for the visually impaired pedestrians, we propose a haptic map based on a pin-matrix display, namely BrailleDis 9000, as a pre-journey system enabling users to follow virtual routes. By utilizing multimodal interactions users not only can achieve most of basic operations (e.g., search, zoom in and zoom out), but also provide much more detailed and dynamic information of the surroundings, that is another crucial advantage compared with printed tactile maps.
Additionally, we are planning to find out what kinds of interactive approaches are better to render map on a pin-matrix. For instance, when blind users search one place, how to feedback the results accurately should be considered. Only setting the result in the center of the display or audio introductions to position of the result, is not enough. Flashing pins of the result on and off in the center of the display might be a better method.
