Software-based energy management for wireless sensor systems
The aim of the "Cool Silicon" Spitzencluster is to increase the energy-efficiency of embedded and microelectronic systems. As a part of this framework, the R&D project "CoolConSens" concentrates on wireless sensor networks for condition monitoring applications. One research focus will be on novel solutions for an overall energy management including all system elements for sensor data acquisition and processing, radio communications, and energy storage and conversion. Embedded software platforms with components for measuring, modeling, and predicting the power consumption as well as suitable interfaces to underlying hardware abstraction layers and application-specific software may serve to realize an integrated energy management. Finding an optimal trade-off between a fine-grained and feature-rich API and a fully transparent mode of operation of the energy management platform represents a question yet to be answered. Additional challenges arise from quality of service (QoS) requirements found in typical application areas like acoustic condition monitoring. The presentation will give an overview of technologies for software-based embedded energy management and will outline some of the expected results of the "CoolConSens" project.
